How to Make a Sidewalk Chalk Mosaic

During COVID, we spent a lot of time outside. We rode bikes, scooters, took the dogs for walks, and played with sidewalk chalk! This sidewalk chalk mosaic was extremely fun to do with the kids. Here’s how to make a sidewalk chalk mosaic!

Things you need:

First, pick a good spot for your design.

If we lived in a neighborhood, we would have done this where everyone walking by could see it. Since we are not, we picked a smooth spot on our driveway for our mosaic.

Next, use your tape to make a large shape.

We did a heart! I loved how the heart had many geometric qualities to it because it made the mosaic even more beautiful. You can truly choose any shape you want OR just freestyle it!

During this project, I spoke with my littles about shapes as we were creating! It was a great time to talk about simple shapes and more complex shapes.

I also love using “>Tangrams to help my littles understand shapes and how they can be combined to create later shapes! “>Check this out {affiliate link}.

Then, use your tape to section off the inside of the shape into a bunch of smaller shapes.

I started with one line from the center of the heart to the outside of the heart and then continued taping randomly from there. I would have made some of our shapes even smaller but we ran out of tape!

After that, color in your shapes with your chalk!

This was so much fun… and messy! It was a WINDY day, so our chalk dust kept going everywhere. When we do this again, we will be doing it on a day that is NOT so windy.

You can find chalk at Walmart or Target… but here are two fun choices from Amazon! I’m a Crayola snob most of the time… but they are much more expensive than this brand!

We didn’t blow off any of the chalk dust intentionally because that made it go all over the driveway. I suggest just letting it be… but that’s up to you!

Next, PEEL THE TAPE OFF!

Goodness! This was SO MUCH FUN to watch our crazy coloring become a beautiful geometric shape was extremely satisfying. It only lasted a few moments because then the kids scraped their feet all around on it and it was ruined.
